We are Quixote Club

Quixote Club is a members-only, premier social haven for seekers of modern luxury, activity, and philanthropy. Located in Sumter, South Carolina, Quixote Club has the best of all worlds straddling the Sandhills, Pee Dee, and Lowcountry regions.

Our club is nestled in the heart of Sumter, South Carolina. Incorporated as Sumterville in 1845, the city has grown and prospered from its early beginnings as a plantation settlement.

A keystone of this history is the Sunset Country Club, which opened in 1922. It was one of the oldest golf courses in the Santee region. Acquired in December 2019, Greg and Lewis Thompson, key investors, were eager to start a new generation beginning with Quixote Club.

Quixote Club is inspired by the character, Don Quixote, a man who dared the impossible, Quixote Club was founded on the principals of a visionary. Wearing passion, focus, and persistence as badges of honor while always promoting innovation and collaboration with those who share in our mission.

Our world-class golf course, skillfully crafted clubhouse, and first-class staff invite generous, philanthropic minded individuals from all over the country to participate in a club that prides itself in leaving a legacy behind for future generations to enjoy.

Our Purpose

CHARTER School Timeline

Greg and Lewis Thompson started Quixote Club with a vision to give back to the community by supporting children and their families. The end goal is attracting more families to plant their roots within the Thompson's hometown of Sumter, South Carolina.

With this vision in mind, Quixote Club was created to connect, inspire, and change lives through golf.

With the support of its philanthropic minded members, proceeds from Quixote Club are reinvested back into the community through the Sumter STEAM Charter School.

Through membership and corporate sponsors, Quixote Club is a catalyst to elevate the community by providing a world-class education to our youth and enriching the history of Sumter through philanthropy.

  • In early 2019, Sumter STEAM Charter School was conceptualized by Greg Thompson. To bring this concept to fruition, he began bringing on individuals, experts in their field, who shared his vision of bringing a Public Charter School to Sumter, South Carolina.

  • In April 2020, the impossible became possible with the unanimous vote from the board of the Public Charter Schools District to begin operations in the Fall of 2021. Beginning with kindergarten and first-grade levels, it is set to expand to further grades and add more scholars in the ensuing years.

In June 2020, the Founding Executive Director finalists for Sumter STEAM Charter School were given a tour of the proposed location of the school.

Quixote Clubhouse

Designed by architect Jeff Harbison, he intentionally designed the clubhouse with the landscape in mind. Offering a backdrop to golf, the clubhouse works in tandem with the nature that surrounds it. Having a modern, art deco style, it has all the features of modern luxury. When arriving at the clubhouse, a porte-cochère appears to be floating due to its slim, modern support beams. Entering the house are windows that cascade a waterfall of light onto the grand staircase. A deeply, overhanging terrace bar overlooks the course inviting you to stay awhile and take in the scenic views.

Our course design

sunset-render.png

Designed by renowned Kris Spence, of Spence Golf Design, and Jack Nicklaus, II, of Nicklaus Design, our course combines beauty, challenge, and an unmatched golf experience. The beauty of this landscape is the grandeur of live and red oaks. This 6800-yard course features a par 70 and will test your talents with strategically placed bunkers and landing areas, intending for each approach shot to be calculated.

Splayed out over 175 acres of trees and turf, the course was designed to exude character and legendary architecture. Ample width, long vistas, and abundant turf flowing through majestic live oaks entice aggressive play off the tee, however; sufficient complexity created within the green surfaces and surrounds require well thought out approach and test every element of the players short game. These natural surroundings of Quixote Club will always play firm and fast, with exceptional shot values and magnificent views of each hole.
